The Cameroon Forum of Regulatory Institutions widely known by its French acronym as FIRC is currently exploring ways of harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to strengthen its regulatory frameworks, foster public trust and contribute to the sustainable development of the country.

This exercise is taking place in Yaoundé within the ambit of a two-day Capacity Building Workshop on AI for Public Sector Regulators under the banner: “Artificial Intelligence at the Service of Public Service Regulators.”

The workshop kick-started 21 January 2025, with FIRC’s Vice President Prof. Ebot Ebot Enaw highlighting the unique opportunity it offers for member institutions to acquire relevant knowledge and skills needed to tap into the full potential of AI. This, he emphasized, will enable them to better serve citizens, enhance decision-making processes, and create more efficient, responsive, and ethical regulatory frameworks.

Prof. Ebot Ebot Enaw, who also serves as the Director General of ANTIC, further noted that by adopting and integrating AI into their regulatory frameworks, FIRC member institutions would be empowered to identify trends, predict outcomes, and make decisions with a level of precision and speed previously unattainable.

The workshop, led by national and international experts, combines theoretical insights, practical case studies and demonstrations of AI’s potential, along with real-world applications tailored to the public service regulatory framework.

Prof. Ebot Ebot Enaw expressed optimism about the outcomes of the workshop, describing it as a platform that will enable FIRC to chart a path toward shaping the future of regulation  one that is more adaptive, efficient, citizen-centric and capable of meeting the demands of an increasingly complex world.

Participants at the workshop are drawn from the eleven member institutions of FIRC notably: ANTIC, Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority, Standards and Quality Agency (ANOR), Electricity Sector Regulatory Agency (ARSEL), National Communication Council (NCC), Public Contract Regulatory Agency (ARMP), Hydrocarbons Prices Stabilisation Fund (CSPH), ART, CNSC, ASRAN and APN.
